Tea time ain’t what it used to be! Back in the good old days, three-quarters of a century ago, it was one of the three square meals we grew up on, being breakfast, dinner at midday and tea in the evenings.It seems I can still hear my dearly departed mother calling out, ‘you children come and get your tea, while it’s hot’, or ‘before it gets dark.’They were the kerosene oil lamp days. No Belco bills to worry about.Nowadays, Tea Time is something else. Fabulous, sophisticated, classy, hats of all shapes and styles, gloves and plenty of finger foods. That’s especially if it’s a ‘High Tea’ of the order sponsored by the Rose Bell Missionary Society of St Paul AME Church, Hamilton; or the one at Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel by Cindy Swan and her Project Action Team in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee Year of Queen Elizabeth.At St Paul, nothing but the best of gold and silver service and finest tea sets would do.Chief among the 200 or more patrons at the Princess was Bermuda’s new Governor, George Fergusson. He made his grand entrance with the pomp, pageantry provided by the music of a bagpiper and young cadets bearing the Union Jack and the Bermuda Flag.The Governor joined others at the VIP table, including Roman Catholic Bishop of Hamilton, Bishop Robert J Kurtz; Anglican Bishop Patrick White and Mrs. White; former Hamilton Mayor Lawson Mapp; Mrs Justice Norman Wade-Miller and her physician son, Dr. Yousef Wade; Mrs Emily McGregor; Canadian Consul Heather Conyers and of course, Mrs Cindy Swan and her husband, UBP leader Kim Swan.
