Sometimes it pays to take a chance
The Guest Columnist this week is Alan Douglas. Alan has been playing bridge for more than 40 years, and has represented Bermuda in International Competition more than 20 times. He won the Caribbean and Central American Championships in 2003, and also has numerous regional and sectional wins to his credit. The 14th World Bridge Games (formerly the Bridge Olympiad) are currently being contested in Lille, France.Bermuda sent an Open Team to compete in this event. At the time of writing this article the Finals of this event are being played (sadly Bermuda is not in the Finals). The Finalists are :-Poland vs Sweden Open ChampionshipRussia vs England - Women’s ChampionshipAnd Hungary vs USA - Senior Championship. Please note the Bermuda team beat Sweden convincingly in the round robin of the event, scoring 26 imps vs 4 imps to Sweden. A great win for BermudaSweden played USA in the Open Quarterfinals and in the last segment with only 14 of the 96 boards left to play, and with the score USA 165-Sweden 148, the following board was played. In the Open Room, East -West played 5 doubled ,-1 for 200 to the Swedish North- South. In the Closed Room the following auction was held with USA sitting N/S and Sweden E/WWest North East SouthBertheauRodwell CullinMeckstroth_ _ _ 3P 3NT 4 4NTX P P PEast (Cullin) was on lead against 4NT doubled. His hand was the following-AK108753K932void83What would you lead? Remember these are all World Class players.Cullin led the 3, his partner Bertheau won the Ace . North and South following small.Bertheau now led the 6 North played the J East won the K and South played small. Cullin can now see 4 tricks for the defence - 2 hearts and the A and K of spades. This beats the contract by one and Sweden would score +100 to go with the +200 they got in the Open room. This would be 7 imps to Sweden. The commentators on BBO Vugraph who were looking at all 4 hands said that he would cash out for down one or two, or would he find a magic switch? Cullin thought for a long while, realising that the double of 4NT by his partner should show more than just one Ace and figured out that his partner either held the A or the Q, and then led a small heart back to his partner who now won the Q and led another spade back. When the smoke cleared, North-South were down 7 for 1700 which when added to the 200 won in the Open Room meant 18 imps to Sweden. Sweden went on to win this quarterfinal by just 4 imps.Obviously if you are Swedish sometimes it pays to take a chance. The whole hand was:-NorthQJ9J874A107K54West East62 AK108753AQ5 K932J96 voidQJ1097 83South4106KQ85432A62Ps, after 32 boards of the Open Final - Sweden lead Poland 88 to 43.
