Dr Dorothy stars on her Alaska cruise
When Dr Dorothy Matthews Paynter launched the celebration of her 90th birthday in June, we referred to her as The Queen B of Bermuda’s beauticians, and doyenne of local hairdressers. And since that Sunday a whole lot of celebratory events have taken place. Biggest of course was her much anticipated cruise to Alaska. Dr Dorothy and nearly 50 family and friends returned from the cruise just before Cup Match. But Dorothy stayed on the Island just long enough to catch a plane to Atlanta, Georgia, where was invited to participate in an event.Fabulous, was the consensus among persons on the cruise. They said unrelated passengers on the liner all wanted to know “who this Dorothy” was.The big highlight was the night when Dr Matthews produced the up-dated play she first produced at the big celebration she had for her 80th birthday milestone. The cast was drawn from members of the cruising party, including granddaughters Julie Matthews, Leslie Christopher, Nishanti Bailey, Vennlyn Smith, Shane Robinson Jr.The play is titled Hair Do Heaven”. It is about a wayward young girl (Julie as Patty Ann) who was too tired one night to fix her hair before going to bed. During her sleep she dreamt she went to heaven. Mr Peter who was keeping the gate would not let her in “looking like that”. He was adamant. She ws frightened. Mr Peter told her she should be frightened 'looking like that! She had to stay outside gasping as she saw a parade of others being let in, such as singer Violeta Carmichael (late daughter of Mrs Marie Lodge who has been featured previously in Island Notebook, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Etta James and other celebrities. Appropriate music was played, like “Bermuda Is Another World”, when Violeta made her grand entry with her hair looking so good. After getting a good lecture from Mr Peter at the gate about his role in keeping all out of “Hair Do Heaven”, who don’t take care of their hair before going to sleep nights, Patty Ann wakes up to the music of Bob Marley's “Everything’s Going to be All Right”.The cast then broke out in “The Electric Slide”, and the party really got on for the rest of the night.
