An action-packed Labour Day weekend

Somerset captain Jekon Edness leads the parade through the main streets of Somerset after leading the club to victory in Cup Match.

We were engrossed this past Labour Day weekend in what can be best described as a “smorgasboard” of social, cultural, sporting and fellowship events, some of which were captured in phographs on this page/They included the Bermuda Industrial Union’s 31st Annual Banquet at Southampton Princess ; two funerals as well as an unusual solemnisation of Holy Matrimony for a young Nigerian couple at the Anglican Cathedral, followed by an awesome reception at the fabulous Tucker’s Point Hotel. And if that was not enough, we joined in a fizzled-out torchlight for the victorious Somerset Cricket Club at the 110th Annual Cup Match. Somerset’s captain Jekon Edness playing his part well, again, as above he led the parade through the main streets of Somerset. At the outset he appeared as if he wished he had been given a white steed on which to ride rather than the solid black one, which some wits said, was a bit frisky, like it had come across the bridge from St George’s.The big social event of the weekend was the BIU banquet which we report on in stories and pictures.

Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert, (centre), welcomes guest speaker Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, third from right, and other headtable guests about to enter the packed banquet hall. Others shown (from right) are Premier Paula Cox and husband Germain Nkeuleu; Helena (Molly) Burgess, long-serving union general secretary; Master of Ceremonies, Andre Rochester and friend Cathy Wilson. Mr Rochester is president of the Union’s Garage Division.
