Milton’s I-Ching to help people
What if gaining insight and clarity into a situation you are grappling with was as easy as tossing three coins into the air? It just might be — suggests Milton ‘Tommy’ Hill.Mr Hill has been practicing I-Ching, the ancient Chinese art of problem solving, for the past 25 years. It involves shaking three coins onto a table at random, while the practitioner creates a six-line drawing, known as a hexagram. The hexagram then correlates to a particular text in a book called ‘I-Ching Oracle’, which is used to interpret a person’s current life situation, answer questions and give advice.Mr Hill will be offering his I-Ching readings for the first time on Island. He spent the past five years growing a client base in Toronto, where people were quite open to Eastern medicine and spiritual practices, like Qigong, he explained.“Having seen how alternative medicine and alternative spirituality has grown on the Island, albeit slowly, and the fact there are a lot of people who are more open to new things than the surface generally reveals, I think there might be people interested,” Mr Hill said.He said the readings could help people develop a better sense of self empathy or self compassion. The overall goal is for people to leave with the tools to “be more effective at their day to day endeavours and to not live a life based on striving”.“A lot of times people I have noticed in Bermuda are striving. I am not talking about hard work, but people living in a constant state of anxiety, trying to make something happen that is usually closer than they realise.“I think that a lot of times people try to race water into flowing rather than letting it flow and it creates problems for people.”Mr Hilton first learned about I-Ching while browsing through books at a local thrift store in 1986. He said he was strongly drawn to the copy of ‘I Ching Oracle’ — considered one of the oldest Chinese texts — and started reading as soon as he got home. What he read not only changed his life, but led him on a path to self discovery and sparked in him an interest in different Eastern spiritual and medical practices.Mr Hill said the initial reading he did on himself was very accurate and eye-opening. “I had a similar type of reflective experience and I thought ‘That was interesting’ and have been using that ever since,” he said.“I continued to use it and started to learn about other related forms of spiritual practice, like Buddhism and Taoism and I continued my practice.“For the most part I never tried to do readings with other people, it’s only been over the past five years that I started to share.”Mr Hill first met spiritual teacher Harrison ‘Tat’ Hesketh, head of the Astral Physics School, in 1987. He reconnected with the spiritual teacher in Toronto in 2006, at which time he was encouraged to share his teachings with others. He said the reaction he gets from most people after a reading is that he “hit the nail on the head”. During his time in Canada, he had become loosely associated with scores of people who came regularly for readings; some even continue to get readings online.Mr Hill said: “[How often they come] depends on what the person is going through. Sometimes they might be going through a very difficult period and find it useful and helpful to have readings on a more frequent basis.“While other people may get a reading because they are approaching a crossroads and would like to be able to have a different perspective on their circumstances.“Then there are also other people through this who then decide they would like to actually learn to take up the practice of I-Ching themselves. I have helped a few dozen people learn the practice,” he explained.Mr Hill said people of all different spiritual walks could benefit from I-Ching. “There are no prerequisites for it in terms of belief or doctrine or anything else for a person to be able to derive benefits for these readings because that was the thing that struck me right in the beginning.“In 1986 [when I started] it wasn’t like I believed in [Eastern spiritual practices]. I just followed the instructions in the book and saw it was completely different from anything I could have imagined.”Mr Hill also conducts birth readings, where he uses a person’s hour, day, month and year of birth to assess certain situations in their life. He said he can also provide an overview of things blocking a person from reaching their full potential in life. While he admitted some people might not be receptive to I-Ching, he hopes he can garner some interest on the Island. “That’s why I want to tell people about it. People can make their own choices, and they will, but at the same time if no one knows you are in business how can you help them?”To find out more e-mail bermudayichingoracle@gmail.com
