When one door closes, another one opens — the familiar saying rings true for local model Davika Hill. She submitted her photo to an online competition held by Caribbean magazine Kurama earlier this year, but didn’t get enough ‘likes’ to win. However the former Miss Bermuda contestant got to see the silver lining when her picture was seen by a modelling agency and training school in St Lucia. The 24-year-old was recently chosen as the face of Fab-Fetale Island Exclusive Model Management and Modelles Magnifique Training School. She will represent the agency on magazines covers, newspapers, flyers, posters, billboards and other forms of advertising campaigns.Ms Hill was selected after excelling in a series of online examinations during a 12-week model training course this summer.Fab-Fetale CEO Michelle Auguste said Ms Hill was chosen because of her excellent communication skills, ability to think on her feet and bubbly personality.“She also excelled over her counterparts when scoring an incredible 100 percent in that matriculation process,” Ms Auguste explained. “She is the first model trainee to [get a perfect score] in this particular category and we hope that future trainees can adopt her trend.”Ms Hill started modelling by accident several years ago. She was a spectator at the annual bridal fair at the Fairmont Southampton when she was spotted by local designer Amethyst and invited to model in the show.“I had no experience and no idea what I was doing,” Ms Hill said. “I remember I did kind of a runway no-no because I walked to the beat of the music and then the songs changed and the beat switched up and I did a small stumble, but I kept my focus and continued walking.“I had so much fun and I knew that modelling was something I wanted to continue to pursue.”Back in high school the statuesque beauty was told regularly that she should model, but she didn’t have the confidence to give it a try.She said: “I was always super shy, but as I got older and when I set off for college I thought I have to get out of this shell because sometimes if you are shy and keep to yourself you miss out on opportunities and experiences, like meeting new people or learning new things. I thought why not just go for it.”She pushed herself to take part in fashion shows, starting with the Duchess and Dukes of the Runway Charity Fashion Show in 2009. She was also one of the contestants in the 2011 Miss Bermuda pageant. Those early experiences instilled in her a love for the catwalk. “I love how it’s such a rush back stage, but as soon as you step out on the runway it all goes away and no one in the audience has a clue about what goes on behind the scenes. They see the finished project, but not the work that goes into it — that intrigues me.”When not on the runway Ms Hill is studying early childhood education at the Bermuda College; she hopes to one day run her own preschool. In addition to developing confidence, modelling has helped her improve her communication and job interview skills. These will benefit her through the rest of her life “no matter where I go”, she said.Ms Hill will represent the Caribbean model agency through July 2013. This week she will visit Rodney Bay, St Lucia for her graduation dinner and award ceremony after completing the training course this summer. While there she will take part in interviews, photo shoots and sightseeing tours to promote the agency. She will also have a chance to speak to others about Bermuda. One of her other duties as spokesperson for Fab-Fetale is to recruit potential talent and models for the agency and the training school. Ms Hill will be compensated for any people she brings to the agency, explained Ms Auguste.Ms Hill said representing the agency was a big opportunity to grow and find out what the modelling industry is all about. While she admitted it wasn’t the same as working in New York or Paris, she believed it would expose her to more international markets than she would have access to in Bermuda.“I think having this opportunity now and seeing what is out there, for me it definitely piques my interest to see how far I can go with this.“I tell everyone that school is still a priority for me because I have always had a passion for working with children, but this is great opportunity.”Once she graduates from the Bermuda College, she hopes to focus on modelling for a while, but maintains she won’t abandon her studies all together. For more information on the model agency, visit www.facebook.com/FabFetaleModels.
