Rosaline Darrell dies in Ohio
It was Saturday exactly a week ago last rites were held at Wayman Chapel AME Church in Dayton, Ohio for my sister Rosaline Marie Philip Darrell, who passed away at age 78, on October 13.Though she migrated to the United States some 50 years ago, Rosaline kept close contact with a host of family and friends in her native land, visiting frequently, and entertaining them royally in Dayton when the opportunity permitted. She was the seventh child and third daughter of the late Aubrey and Marie Philip.Her early education began at the Southampton Glebe School (now renamed Dalton E Tucker School), Sandys Secondary and Secretarial Business School. Seeking broader horizons and in pursuit of higher education, she migrated to New York, attended Sawyer Business College to further her administrative skills. She married her childhood sweetheart, Warwick, Bermuda-born Lionel CW Darrell, in Brooklyn, New York in 1967. He predeceased her, leaving her two loving sons: Michael Darrell and Waylon Darrell.After a decade in New York, she moved to Dayton and entered employment with the Montgomery County Job and Family Services where she remained for 25 years, retiring in 1999. She was given numerous awards for exceptional service on the job.Rosaline was known to be a quiet, humble, friendly, and generous individual who valued the bond of family more than anything else. She was an avid fan of football, baseball, tennis, and wrestling. She was a member of Wayman Chapel AME church for 30 years.Rosaline was also preceded in death by her sister, Myra Alice Wallace, brothers, Erskine Philip, Byron Philip and Aubrey Philip. In addition to Michael and Waylon Darrell, she is survived by two stepsons, Lionel and Terry Darrell; three grandsons: Donte, Treshaun, and Kiptoo; Also brothers, Rev. Howard Philip, who resides in Dayton, and gave the eulogy at her funeral; sister Ivy Simons, who resides in New York and was in Dayton at the time of her death; and of course this columnist, Ira Philip. Also there are three sisters-in-law, Leola and Marilyn Philip and Norma Darrell; special niece and nephew Myra Wallace and Brandon Wallace and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives in California, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New York, Atlanta, France, and Spain.
