Cameron to be awarded honorary degree
Another fantastic honour has come the way of the internationally acclaimed Bermudian-born stage, screen, television and radio actor to whom I generally refer as “The Great” Earl Cameron, CBE.This time its news came in a gilt-edged letter from no less distinguished a personage as the Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, Prof. Nigel Thrift, FBA.The Chancellor wrote:”It is with great pleasure I write to tell you that the Senate of the University of Warwick has resolved that you be invited to receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters of this University. We would be delighted if you are able to accept.“We would like, if you were willing to accept, to confer the degree at one of our degree ceremonies, either in January or July 2013. We would like to award your degree at a congregation to be held on Wednesday, 23 January 2013.”Earl who has been celebrating his 94th birthday, had no problem agreeing to be honoured by the University at its January ceremonies. Accompanied by his wife Barbara, he was just settling down after their extended visit to the land of his birth, at the invitation of the Mayor and Corporation of Hamilton for ceremonies attendant to the rededication and renaming of historic Hamilton City Hall Theatre as ‘The Earl Cameron Theatre’.At that event, this columnist was privileged to be asked to formally introduce and present Mr Cameron to the distinguished assemblage at City Hall. I remember praising the City Fathers for bestowing such a great and mightily deserved honour upon a son of the soil, who over a period of 70 years had criss-crossed and transcended social and cultural boundaries, serving as a harbinger of peace and goodwill to become an ACTOR of extraordinary renown. The University of Warwick I discovered from Wikipedia, is consistently ranked among the top ten in British university rankings. In latest national rankings by The Guardian for 2013 it is ranked 5th overall. In 2008 the Sunday Times released averages of its rankings for the period 1998 to 2007, in which Warwick ranked 7th overall. And according to the survey by Times Higher Education, Warwick is ranked 6th among UK universities for graduate starting salaries. According to a 2011 High Fliers Research survey, Warwick is the “second most targeted university in the UK by top employers”Among other significant accolades bestowed on Mr Cameron during his long career was the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bermuda Government through it Arts Council in 1999, and a retrospective by the prestigious National Film Theatre of London; as well as in 2007 the Prospero Award by the Bermuda International Film Festival.
