Jessica Lewis will be the lone Bermuda representative at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London after Sandy Mitchell withdrew due to health issues.Mitchell was due to compete in the para dressage at the summer spectacle but was forced to withdraw at the 12th hour. The Bermuda Paralympic Association (BPARAS) wished Mitchell a speedy recovery as he looks to regain a clean bill of health.“We regret to inform the many admirers of Sandy Mitchell who qualified to compete in Equestrian in the London 2012 Paralympic Games that Bermuda has withdrawn from the Para Dressage due to Mr. Mitchell’s recent health challenges,” said a spokesperson from the BPARAS.“Hopefully the slot can be taken up by a rider from another nation.”Mitchell, a veteran of three Games, remains upbeat despite the unfortunate turn of events for him.“I have been blessed to have been able to compete in the three previous Paralympics,” said Mitchell. “I was looking forward to competing in London 2012 but due to my extended hospital stay, I have had to withdraw.“I am now focusing on Rio 2016. I wish my team mate, Jessica Lewis, the best of luck in London.”Lewis will fly the flag solo as she competes in the 100, 200, and 400 metres, reaching at least the ‘B’ standard in all three events while breaking her own personal best times. She previously made history at the 2011 ParaPan American Games in Mexico when she became the first ever track and field athlete to represent Bermuda at a major para-sport Championships. The Paralympics runs from August 29th to September 9th.
