Qualifying agony for Aranxta
Bermuda's Aranxta King suffered anguish in last night's women's long jump qualifiers after narrowly missing out on reaching the final.King posted a best jump of 6.40 metres in her first attempt to tie with Veronika Shutkova of Belarus, who claimed the final qualifying spot as her second longest jump (6.21) was further than King's (6.20).Her near miss was all the more the impressive considering she only qualified for London 2012 via a wildcard. The personal bests of all 31 of her competitors in yesterday's qualifying round were also better than King's, who said she was disappointed not to have jumped further.“I had a really great first jump but when I landed I dropped my knees a little too early,” said the 22-year-old.“I was really pumped because that jump felt really good but after that I fouled and my last jump wasn't the best.“It was exciting to be out there and I'm pretty sure I was very close to qualifying for the final.“It's disappointing to know I was so close but I gave my all and I placed better than when I came in. I think I was ranked 34th going into the Olympics.”King intends on turning professional after the Olympics having recently graduated from Stanford University. She believed becoming a full-time athlete would enable her to fulfill her potential as she would no longer have to juggle the long jump with her studies.“I'm going to be taking some time off and then pick things back up again, continue training and look towards next season,” said the former World youth champion.“I'll be in the US, I'm not sure where yet, those plans are to be determined. I'm going to give it a year and focus fully on track as I believe I can jump so much further. I'm looking forward to having just one focus.”King admitted it was slightly nerve-wracking performing at the Olympic Stadium and had been taken aback by the noise generated by the 80,000 spectators.“It was crazy out there, when someone from Team GB competes it's deafening. It was really exciting to be out there and the crowd was amazing.”The top qualifiers in the women's long jump qualifiers were Britain's Shara Proctor, Janay DeLoach of the United States and Turkey's Karin Mey Melis.
