Lewis relishing London experience
Jessica Lewis has been officially welcomed to the 2012 Paralympics along with four other countries at the Flag Raising Ceremony in the Paralympic village in London.Bermuda’s only athlete at the Games attended the ceremony at the weekend which was headed by Paralympic Village mayor Eva Loeffler.Iraq, Mali, Mozambique, and Armenia were also welcomed on the same day as Bermuda.“It certainly is an incredible environment,” said wheelchair athlete Lewis. “There is a wide range of physical disabilities here, and it’s amazing as they all do the same things able bodied people do except they do it a bit differently.“One of the volunteers last night in the food hall asked how I was enjoying the village, and said the athletes were incredibly inspirational.“I wish everyone could come and just witness how people with real disabilities just get on with it. There was a young man sitting at our table for dinner last night with no arms so he held his knife and fork between his toes.“The blind athletes walk in a line with hands on the persons shoulder in front and a guide leading them.”After the flag raising, Lewis, who will compete in the 100, 200 and 400 metres, was interviewed by British TV Channel 4.She said the interview was one of her highlights so far. The 2012 Paralympics starts tomorrow.
