Bermuda tennis trio Gavin Manders, David Thomas and Neal Towlson were all eliminated from the men’s singles at the quarter-final stage today, but top seed Tyler Smith is through to the women’s semi-finals after beating Katie Tinkler from the Isle of Man 6-1, 7-6.Smith is now left to carry Bermuda’s hopes on her young shoulders in the semi-finals after team-mate Jacklyn Lambert went down Sandra Moll-Andreu who was part of the Menorca women’s team that lost to Bermuda in the gold medal match on Monday.“She (Tinkler) stepped it up big time in the second set and fought hard and I just had to step it up even more,” said the 16-year-old Smith who is already assured of at least a bronze. “I’m satisfied with how I played.”Smith said she was grateful for the support of family and the fans who came out to watch the matches. She is also playing in the doubles with Erika Bove. “I love the sport and my team is already there for me, plus my grandparents and the Bermudians who come out and watch,” said the teen.It was a good start to the day for the Menorca women as Moll-Feely’s doubles partner Laura Moreno-Hernandez, the third seed, beat Pauline Nordlund of Aland 6-3, 6-2. Moreno-Hernandez will meet Smith in tomorrow morning’s semi-final while Moll-Andreu will play Laura Feely of Isle of Man in the other semi-final. Feely was a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 winner over Joanna Dyer of Guernsey.Bermuda’s men endured a disappointing morning on the court as Guernsey claimed two of the semi-final places.Number two seed Manders was a set up against Dominic McLuskey of Guernsey before losing the match on the super tiebreak. He won the first set 6-1 and then lost the second 6-3.“Im definitely not too happy with how it turned out,” said the second-seeded Manders who, along with top ranked Scott Clayton of Jersey, was eliminated yesterday.“I’m proud of the way I fought and I give thanks for all the support that we’ve had up here at the stadium and I would just like to apologise for not bringing any medals to ’Bermy’ in the singles as the number two seed. It is a big disappointment all around.”Manders and his opponent, Dominic McLuskey, know about each other, having first played in the Island Games as teenagers.“He’s a really good player, he has a couple of golds in the Island Games team events, and I’m pretty sure in the individual singles as well.“It was a momentum shift, he was up 9-4 in the super tie-breaker third set and I brought it back. I think I fought off a total of nine match points before he closed it out, so hats off to him.“I lost to him in a super tie-breaker in Gibraltar in 2005 so that is the second time he has beaten me in a super tie-breaker and it is a tough one to swallow.”McLuskey was full of praise for Manders afterwards.“He played a brilliant first set and I know what Gavin is like, he’s a fighter,” said the eighth seed. “In the second set I played smarter and it was extremely close in the tie-break.“We played when I was about sixteen, about seven years ago in Gibraltar, when I won in a championship tie-breaker again which was extremely close. I enjoy playing against Gavin, he’s a great man to play against.”McLuskey is enjoying himself on the Island and is looking forward to seeing more of the beaches.“We haven’t had much time for that because we are playing at lot but I love Bermuda and would like to come back here on holiday or even to live,” he admitted.McLuskey could find himself playing against team-mate Patrick Ogier, the third seed, in Friday’s final. Ogier was playing on the court next to McLuskey in another Guernsey-Bermuda fixture and came out 6-4, 6-0 winner over David Thomas.“I know that Dave had a really tough match yesterday and had a great win and had doubles after that so I know he was feeling it,” said Ogier, whose reporter brother Tom has been very vocal in his support.“We had a great first set and I edged it and I thought that whoever lost the first set was going to find it a struggle, so I won the second set a bit more comfortable. It would be incredible to play Dom in the final.“There is still a lot of tennis to play in this heat. We love being here but when it is this hot you just want to be at the beach. We’ve know Gavin and those guys for about eight years so they’re friends of ours and are great guys.”At one point it looked like being an all-Channel Islands semi-final with Jersey’s top seed Scott Clayton also through to the quarter-finals.However, while James Connolly won his match against Towlson 6-1, 6-2, doubles partner Clayton crashed to Billy Harris of the Isle of Man, 7-5, 6-3.“I played a great player today, Billy is a friend of mine who plays good tennis and it is a shame that we had to play each other in the quarter-final,” said a disappointed Clayton after his defeat.“The first set was an hour and a half and he played a great match. I’m hoping James can get the job done now. We played each other (Jersey and Guernsey) in the team event in the final so it was good for Channel Island tennis.”Connelly and Towlson sat and chatted after their match ended, such is the spirit of the Island Games.“I went to college in America for a year and one of my team-mates was actually on the team that Neal is on in North Carolina and so we spoke about that,” said Connelly.“It was nice to exchange a few friendly words at the end before going our separate ways. I’m guaranteed a medal now for singles. I got bronze at the last Games and would love to go one better.”Harris will play Ogier in Thursday morning’s semi-final while fifth seed Connelly will take on McLuskey.
