Bermuda squash team suffer first defeat

Bermuda’s squash team are guaranteed a medal but it’s unlikely to be gold after they were beaten tonight by Cayman Islands.Both teams were undefeated going into the round-robin clash and both with nine points.But with one game remaining in the best-of-five encounter, Cayman led 3-1.Bermuda professional Micah Franklin went down to Mark Chaloner 3-1 (7-11, 5-11, 13-11, 2-11).And after both Bermuda ladies, Laura Robinson and Susie Lacey, lost their matches the tie was over.Robinson lost 3-0 to Marlene West (5-11, 8-11, 6-11) and Lacey suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Jaclyn Geils (6-11, 2-11, 4-11).Nick Kyme notched Bermuda’s only win, beating Gabriel Rabess (11-9, 11-5, 11-5).Earlier Bermuda beat Guernsey 4-1 to add to wins over Gibraltar (5-0) and Jersey (3-2).Franklin, Kyme, and Noah Browne put the tie to bed in the first three games to render the final two null and void.Franklin beat Laurence Graham 11-4, 11-6, 11-2, while Kyme beat Omar Kandili 11-7, 11-3, 11-3, and Browne saw off Stehpen Falla 11-3, 11-0, 11-8.Women’s doubles silver medallist Natalie Dodd got past Robinson 11-9, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8 for Guernsey’s lone win, before Rachel Barnes completed the series with an 11-3, 8-11, 11-2, 11-2 win over Amy Stenner.Cayman can clinch the gold medal todorrow with victory over Jersey.Bermuda face last-placed Shetlands Islands.
