Active seniors enjoying life
This film is the kick-start you will need if you struggle to find the energy to move from the couch and head to the gym.‘Autumn Gold' tells the inspiring and motivational stories of five athletes from across Europe who are all longing to climb on the podium at the Track and Field World Masters Championships. And there's a good chance the gruelling training routines of these silver-haired men and women aged 80 to 100 will put you to shame. It's like an advertisement for Age Concern as age is definitely no obstacle for these super-fit and wildly ambitious seniors who want to enjoy their golden years. They urge people to look past the wrinkles and sagging skin as they say: “The body becomes ugly but it still works” and: “I'm not old, I never want to be seen as old.”As soon as they wake up, they are on their backs in bed, bending and stretching their legs. Then they are put through their paces with workouts in the gym, in the park, on their apartment balconies and even weightlifting from the comfort of their armchairs.Sport is their life and their level of fitness is admirable as they make every effort to stay young. Without sport these athletes say life would be “too monotonous and easy” and if they gave up they estimate they'd die “within a month”.You can't help but admire these loveable characters who inject their own humour into the film. One of their biggest hurdles is reading the small print on the application form and they openly give us the details of their sex lives, with one man proudly saying: “I still have some go in me.”These seniors are bursting with determination and competitiveness, but you can't help but feel their biggest race is against the clock as ill health creeps in. It is at times quite painful to watch the puffing, panting and creaking muscles as you half expect one of them to keel over at any minute. It comes down to a competition of age and all the athletes make it over the finish line in an almost triumphant finale to a feel-good film. But win or lose, this film proves that it's all about not giving up on life, whatever your age. It is inspiring to us all as it pushes us to succeed.Tickets are available at www.bdatix.bm, All Wrapped Up Home-Washington Mall, The Money Shop on Dundonald Street and Fabulous Fashions at Heron Bay Plaza.
