Prisoners' artwork goes on display at Masterworks

Prisoners’ art will be the focus of Timely Reflections XI, a new exhibit opening tonight at the Masterworks Foundation. The prisoners received instruction in painting and drawing from Lester Harnett; sewing was taught by Margojean Fraser and sculpture by Chesley Trott.Their work will show as part of Masterworks’ Artists in the Gardens Series.“The inmates benefit from being able to express themselves in their drawings, and to express their inner feelings about being incarcerated,” said a spokesman for Bermuda’s prisons.“You can tell what kind of a person an inmate is by what is on the paper. When they get out they might not have any time for art. When they are incarcerated, this is an opportunity for them to take the time to reflect on their feelings in this way.“A few inmates always want to stick with it, they want to go further with art afterwards. One inmate wants to teach art when he is released, that is his goal.”Funds raised by the exhibit will help purchase new art supplies and support inmates’ families.Tonight’s opening reception is from 5.30pm until 7pm.The exhibit will remain on display until May 17.
