Gilbert & Sullivan Society to present The Met on video

Natalie Dessay in the title role of Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor' will air this weekend at BUEI.

There’s no need to jet off to the Big Apple to see an opera at The Met, as you can now see recordings in Bermuda.Several years ago the Metropolitan Opera agreed with several US theatres to have live satellite broadcasts that was then expanded to include some other countries and now Bermuda has joined the list, although not with live broadcasts. All of the operas will be screened at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and this weekend’s offering is ‘Lucia di Lammoor’.Organiser Matthew Nester, of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, explained that he began working on this project in 2009, because he saw a need for it on the Island.“I can’t tell you the amount of people I have spoken to who will jet over to New York for a weekend to see the opera,” he said. “And it is pretty pricey especially for these days.”He added: “The subtitles will be in Spanish, but we are working with The Met and hopefully we’ll be getting a live feed set up sometime in the future.“In the meantime, they are allowing us to take recordings of their broadcasts, they load them onto a hard drive and send them to us.”‘Lucia di Lammoor’ is the first of many screenings at BUEI.“It is about a woman who is madly in love with a man and is told by her brother that she has to marry another man,” he said. “The conflict ends up driving her mad and in true opera fashion the ending is very tragic.”Following operas will include: ‘Le Compte Ory’ on May 28 and May 29; ‘Capriccio’ on June 11 and 12; ‘Il Trovatore’ on June 25 and June 26; ‘Das Rheingold’ on July 9 and July 10 and ‘Die Walküre’ on July 23 and July 24.Formal dress is not required, but is also not discouraged. A cash bar will be available during all intermissions and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be provided.Tickets $35, are available from www.premiereticketsglobal.com and more information is on www.gands.bm or by e-mailing opera[AT]gands.bm.
