Sybil Barrington to join 2011 London ‘Pride’ parade
Drag Queen Sybil Barrington will join fellow Bermudians in flying the flag for equal rights at this year’s Pride parade in London.Ms Barrington, aka Mark Anderson, is taking part in the parade for the first time in order to highlight the need for discrimination based on sexual orientation to be outlawed in Bermuda. The annual Pride event celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, raises awareness about discrimination and is expected to attract at least a million participants and spectators on July 2 in central London.Bus driver Mr Anderson told The Royal Gazette: “My reason to take part is to basically bring awareness for our fight and struggle for sexual orientation to be included in the Human Rights Act.“I’m going to be going as the Queen of Bermuda and I’m going to wear a Queen of Bermuda sash and a head crown.”Last year, 20 Bermudians were reported to have taken part in the parade and in 2009 the Island was represented by about 30 locals, including then PLP senator Walton Brown.Adam Cooper, who organised last year’s participation, has successfully applied for a place for a Bermuda float in this year’s parade and yesterday encouraged others to get involved. In a message sent to supporters of campaign group Two Words and a Comma, he wrote: “This year’s London Pride parade is fast approaching.“As many of you know, awareness of LGBT rights issues in Bermuda has increased in recent weeks, thanks mostly to the demonstration in front of City Hall, but other events as well.“It would be fantastic to build on this momentum with a Bermuda float in London Pride, which would increase visibility of our cause in both Bermuda and the UK. Now more than ever before, it is important that we make our voices heard.”Last month, about 100 placard-waving supporters demonstrated outside City Hall for the sexual orientation amendment to the Human Rights Act.Anyone interested in joining the Bermuda float on July 2 should e-mail bermudalondonpride[AT]gmail.com.Useful websites: www.pridelondon.org, www.twowordsandacomma.com.
