Fourth screening for ‘The First Grader’
A film about an 84-year-old Kenyan man who attends school for the first time is to screen again this week.Three previous screenings of ‘The First Grader’ have sold out.This fourth screening will take place tomorrow at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute at 6.30pm. The remarkable true story has been a hit with festival audiences worldwide.It focuses on an initiative by the government of Kenya to offer free primary education for the first time. An 84-year-old man, a veteran of the country’s struggle for independence, shows up on the doorstep of a rural school, ready for class.Having never had the benefit of an education, Kimani N’gan’ga Maruge (played by Oliver Litondo) figures it’s never too late to start.Tickets are available at the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by telephone, 297-7314.
