Fiyah Marshall's set on blazing his own trail
A 26-year-old reggae artist is on the path to becoming the next Collie Buddz but insists he’s got a style and swagger all his own.Artist Fiyah Marshall, whose real name is Alex Marshall, is about to release his newest single ‘Take You Away’ and featured music video shot at locations across the Island, from the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse to Crystal Caves. The up-and-coming artist has already found some success in Florida, but he is looking to crack the local market as well.Mr Marshall will be hosting several parties over the Christmas holidays, starting with live performances at the Swizzle-Santa Party, at Muse, on Front Street, on Wednesday; and ending with the launch of his new video at Moon Nightclub on New Year’s Eve.He describes his music as a mix of “feel-good”, “love songs” and “party-rock anthems” and with a style influenced by reggae, hip-hop, house and even Latin vibes.Mr Marshall understands he is up against tough competition on the global music scene, but maintains his music is different from other artists on the local charts. He said he was “inspired” by artists such as Collie Buddz who was one of the first real Bermudian artist making it off the Island but said he’s marking his own path.“Collie Buddz was an inspiration to me. He was proof that even though we are in Bermuda and small we can get something done [on an international level]. But I am definitely doing my own thing and taking my own avenue.“I know a lot of people try to put me in his shadow and compare me to him, it’s just a normal thing because I am another artist making something out of Bermuda, but we definitely have our different styles. But I have nothing but respect for him,” he said.Mr Marshall has been interested in music all his life as a child he sang with the Bermuda Philharmonic Choir. But only in the past four years has he been taking his craft seriously.Several years ago while studying international business at a college in the US, Mr Marshall realised he was ‘missing the passion’.He started recording music as a hobby as a hobby and then worked towards his Pro Tools Certification in audio engineering. He spends most of his time in Tampa Bay, Florida, writing songs and making music; and said everything has “really taken off” for his career over the past two years.During that time he has been networking with industry insiders and promoting his music at internationally renowned clubs such as Zen in Trinidad and lounges such as Vintage & Scene, in Tampa Bay.In addition to performing at the Beach Fest in Bermuda, he’s also had the opportunity to open up for big names like Coolio, Allison Hinds, Sean Paul and Snoop Dogg, but, the unsigned artist said he never wants to forget his roots as a Bermudian.“The hardest part of the business is standing out from the crowd and the funny thing is out there [in the US] they think I am a local artist, so I am coming home to show I am not. I am proud to be from Bermuda.”He recently shot three music videos on the Island, including ‘Take You Away’, ‘Searchin’ and ‘Never Stop’ and plans to release the first video for ‘Take You Away’, featuring Maxim magazine model Angela Torres, early in the New Year.“The whole vision behind the video, because the rest of the ones I did away, I really wanted to come and do something and represent Bermuda in a way no artist has before.“No one has really shown off the Island in the media in a really compelling way to try and peak tourism,” he said of the video, which is sponsored by Bacardi, Buzz and the Crystal Caves. He expects his debut album ‘Blazin’ to be released next spring and said all 15 songs would also be available on iTunes and select retail outlets on the Island.Fiyah Marshall will be performing at Muse restaurant and bar this Wednesday and on December 28 at 1am. Doors open at 10pm and entrance costs $5 in advanced or $10 at the door. He will also be hosting and launching his new video after midnight at Moon Nightclub on New Year’s Eve.For more information on the artist visit: http://www.facebook.com/Fiyahmarshallofficial.
