I have an opinion and like to share it

Patrice Frith Hayward likes to tackle issues, so hosting a talk show on local radio fits her perfectly. Her one-hour show ‘Real women, Real Talk’ has been airing on Magic 102.7FM since August and has become one of the most popular programmes on radio. It airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5.30pm.“I graduated from the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Georgia and I’ve been talking all my life and love to talk and always wanted to host a television talk show,” she said.“I don’t call myself opinionated, but I have an opinion and like to share it. I don’t know when I thought of it (hosting a show) but it was sometime in 2011 when I started LGIT (Ladies Let’s Get it Together) empowerment group. When we held our first ladies retreat and we had a lot to talk about.“Then in April I held a teen retreat during spring break and realised there were things I wanted to talk about and thought that a talk show would be the best vehicle to use to get some dialogue going.“I met Glenn Blakeney (Hott and Magic radio station owner), who has been an acquaintance of mine for many years, and he told me if any time I needed any help with my retreats or things like that to come to him. I said to him ‘I would like to host a talk show to talk about women’s empowerment’ that’s my passion, empowering women and he said ‘okay, come and see me’ and he went for it right away. He said ‘let’s do it’ which kind of scared me because I thought it would have taken a little longer than that.“He told me to come up with a name and I chose ‘Real Women, Real Talk’ after talking a few ideas around. That’s what I wanted, real talk, not beating around the bush and dressing things up. He had faith in me immediately, threw me in the deep end, which is a good thing because it told me he had confidence in me.“There is never a day that I don’t want to do this show, no matter how busy I get, I’m always ready and I’m encouraged by my listeners and the feedback I get. Every week I come with a topic which creates a slight challenge. Sometimes I have guests, sometimes I don’t, but a valuable lesson Thaao Dill (Hott 107.5 DJ) told me when I went in to train is ‘don’t depend on your phone to ring because it is not always going to ring’ … with a topic or without. There have been times when not one single person has called the show so I have to be prepared for no one to call.”Mrs Frith Hayward concedes that while the show addresses women’s issues mostly, it is still quite popular with men.“One man stopped me in town and said ‘I just want to thank you for helping me be a better husband’,” she said. “He said ‘I listen to your show all the time and there are a lot of things I don’t know about you women and now I’m learning to be a better husband’.”“It started off as women’s issues but I swear I have more men callers than women, which is wonderful because I want them involved.”Mrs Frith Hayward talks about social issues, dealing with topics such as abusive relationships, parental responsibilities, women feeling pressured by friends to hurry up and get married, as well as health and fitness issues. Recently she started a new series called GROW (Getting Rid of Whatever is Holding You Back) which encouraged people to let go of things in the past, ‘de-cluttering our lives physically, emotionally’.Mrs Frith Hayward insists the show is not about male-bashing.“The feedback I got from most men was ‘oh, another male-bashing show’,” she said. “That’s why I try my very hardest not to pick on men, but some of them need to be picked on, if they are not doing their job as a father or husband. I try to hold women accountable for their behaviour as well.”Despite her busy schedule Mrs Frith Hayward has even more on her plate with two books in the planning.“My book, Island Sistas, came out in 1999 and I have been writing the sequel since then,” she revealed. “I can’t finish it and it is driving me crazy. The other one will be a women’s empowerment book, covering some of the topics that have been covered on the talk show.”Since 1990 she has produced six plays through her company Hasana Productions. Mrs Frith Hayward is also a producer of ‘For Real’ along with mother and daughter Royce-Ann and Shalane Dill. All three now have characters in the show, which is Bermuda’s first radio soap opera. 3 Deep Productions writes, directs and produces the show which has 11 cast members and support cast.“Royce-Ann and Shalane have been involved in my plays from the technical side of theatre,” said Mrs Frith Hayward. “They have always directed and ran the stage. So we came together independent of Hasana Productions to form 3 Deep Productions.
