People in the audience felt that this was what our community needed.“This type of event helps to bring our community together. Music is the universal language.”Mr Maybury will play the saxophone and clarinet with Eugene (Stacker) Joell playing the guitar. They both sing. Mr Joell said he started taking lessons at age 13, and started playing professionally when he was 19.“My family was pretty musical,” he said. “I came from the Duke Joell side. He had a band and was very good.”He said everyone in his family also sang and there was always a piano in the house when he was growing up.Both men used to have regular gigs in local hotels and entertainment venues during Bermuda’s tourism heyday opportunities to perform today are more rare.Mr Maybury is the assistant bandmaster with the Somerset Brigade Band, and Mr Joell teaches music to a few students.“We are very much supportive of employing local musicians, and honouring the legends,” said Ms Hartley. “These guys are legends. We want to be able to showcase the many and varied talent we have in Bermuda.“Max and Stacker were in the Giant Steps concert we did last year, which was amazing. Bermudians don’t get a chance to really hear these guys any more.“They have put in a lot of years of service and they are the ones on whose shoulders so many of our younger talented people now stand.”To introduce these musicians to the next generation, tickets are being offered at half-price for anyone 15 years old or younger. To encourage tourists to come out, 20 complimentary tickets have been offered to eight hotels and guest properties.Taxis will be sent to collect and return the guests, who will be seated at tables with locals so they can get to known Bermudians.“We did that at the last concert and the guests were overjoyed,” she said. “The visitors were from California and they could not speak more highly of the local talent.”The Giant Steps One in a Million concert will be held at 4pm at Fourways Inn. Tickets, $50, are available from The Music Box on Reid Street or from Mr Butler on 505-3409.
