'Idol' winner here for Vandross tribute
‘American Idol’ winner Ruben Studdard will perform live at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess as part of a tribute to the late Luther Vandross. The award-winning singer would have turned 61 today. In life he was a celebrated hit maker with a deep, rich tenor voice. In death, he has become a dearly missed legend. Songs like ‘Here and Now’, ‘There’s Nothing Better than Love’, ‘So Amazing’ and ‘Dance with My Father’ have become timeless favourites, and signature pieces in one of the last great love song catalogues. His talent will be celebrated in Bermuda on Sunday night.Accompanying Ruben will be top local crooners Jaime Zuill, Gita Blakeney, Lloyd Holder and musician Robert Edwards.Promoter Janson Cross has indicated that this concert won’t be limited to Luther’s fabulous catalogue, but will also feature pieces by soul music greats who inspired Luther Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson. Of course, Ruben will also perform his own songs, along with a few Luther classics. The event is billed as a tribute to Luther Vandross, but promises to be a virtual feast of what old-schoolers call “baby-making music” (slow jams if you have a heart condition). Emcee extraordinaire Bootsie will host the evening and Mr Cross has promised “a great night”.It certainly looks great from this angle.Tickets $85 in advance and $150 for VIP seating can be purchased online, www.bdatix.bm.
