Dismont not disheartened by fashion failure
Despite losing money in his first fashion show in 26 years, Mario Dismont is planning a second edition of ‘Some Like it Hot’.Mr Dismont’s Spectrum Productions staged the show in April, bringing in international designers, models and a celebrity photographer along with BTE News, which ran footage of the show, and Fashion Avenue News, which featured a five-page photo spread in its May issue.Unfortunately for Mr Dismont, the show coincided with both Good Friday and the opening ceremony of the Carifta Games on April 6. A crowd of about 300 attended the show at Fairmont Southampton.Despite the setback, Mr Dismont insists it was a worthwhile venture considering the exposure Bermuda received and he is looking forward to the second show in November.“When I picked the day I had no idea it was Good Friday at the time or the Carifta Games,” said Mr Dismont.“I didn’t find out about the Carifta Games until late February and by that time I had contracted with everyone internationally. We didn’t have a good turnout, we had it the wrong time, but everybody who I have talked to since which have said ‘I heard about it, I’m sorry I missed it and I won’t miss it in November’.“We haven’t put a date on it yet, we’re trying to confirm some things. We’re hoping that we can get other media besides Fashion Avenue News who are coming again and the television station from New York which came as well.”He added: “I had the thought to do something I hadn’t done in a long time and maybe make a dollar or two, but it turned out to be quite the opposite ... I made no money but got great exposure for the Island.“Bermuda Tourism Department came to our assistance by underwriting the cost of bringing the international media to the Island and they are to be heralded because of that. They had the foresight to see that this was potentially a big thing for Bermuda. It was on TV in New York for ten days and in the magazine that has a circulation of 500,000.”Mr Dismont had praise for the host hotel for providing an excellent facility for the show. “We are very thankful to the Fairmont Southampton staff, particularly Cathy Albright who made sure all of our guests were accommodated,” he said.“There were some bumps in the roads with a big production like this but they did their best to make sure it was smoothed out. We look forward to doing something with them in the future. This was an investment, I don’t count it as a loss.“I think it will put Bermuda on the map as being a showplace for international designers from around the world.”To view a video of the show visit http://youtu.be/AUmIvvkiSbg
