Family fun day in memory of shooting victim
Friends of shooting victim Jason Smith have organised a family fun day in a bid to bind the community together and keep the young footballer’s memory alive. They are inviting the community to join them today, from noon until 6pm at Saltus Field. On offer will be children’s activities including fun castles, face painting, fun relays and a mini soccer field.Adults can play crown and anchor or enjoy entertainment by Split Personality and H&H Gombeys. Food items like snowballs, burgers, chicken burgers, cotton candy and popcorn will be for sale.Mr Smith was a 22-year-old Bermuda Regiment Lance Corporal, when he was shot dead in what is believed to be a case of mistaken identity in the early hours of May 1 last year. The former Saltus student had no gang affiliations and was said to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.Shortly after his death, his closest friends formed a group called Live Free and have rallied together to celebrate his life. They also created a scholarship award, presented annually to one Saltus student.Executive group member Francesca Cacace said it was important during these challenging times for the community to unite.“It is our aim to organise and engage in community events to promote positive social environments and build community and family relationships.“[We want] to fulfill our long-term goal of opening a multi-service facility that can allow us to meet individual and family needs in the community.”A seven-a-side football tournament final will kick off at 2.30 pm. Teams include: YOLO D Nation, Simplimente Futbol and FC Jay.Last week more than 160 players participated in the first round; a total of 16 teams wore Live Free jerseys, available at the International Sports Shop.
