Culturefest 2012 starts Saturday

Culturefest, Bermuda’s annual “celebration of all the diverse cultures in Bermuda” will be held this weekend at Dockyard.The two-day event, hosted by Wedco, this year boasts the theme ‘Unity in the Community’, and as in previous years will celebrate Bermuda’s melting pot of natures through a festival of food, entertainment and art.According to event producer, Eugene Dean, “the event will entail an international food court, a visual art exhibit and two stages featuring various forms and genres of entertainment performed by locals and residents who originate from various countries around the world.”The festival will have activities such as Zumba and gymnastics and will also feature “a huge Kids Village, exhibitors and a Vendor Marketplace,” added the producer.Culturefest 2012, which runs from 12pm to 9pm on September 29 and 30 in Dockyard, will also showcase all the nations represented in Bermuda with a flag display.Said Mr Dean: “The opportunity to represent your country in the [flag] procession is open to all residents and visitors alike.“There are nearly 200 countries represented in Bermuda, so getting representation from each country is quite a task.”He continued: “The main countries represented thus far are Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados, Portugal, Azores, India, Brazil, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Scotland, England, Germany, Italy, USA and the Philippines.”Mr Dean also touted many highlights of the event, saying: ‘The main highlight will be experiencing all the various cultures interacting together in one place.”Another special addition at Culturefest 2012 will be the presence of The World Drum.The World Drum is part of the The World Drum Project and is a musical drum that “travels from country to country, people to people and from hand to hand” around the globe.According to the organisation’s website, the ‘heartbeat’ of the drum grows stronger each day as it travels around the world.Said Mr Dean: “The World Drum Project is an idealistic non-profit organisation founded in Norway in October 2006, with focus on peace and environmental issues.“The World Drum itself was created from a spiritual viewpoint of life and is a Shamandrum made in Sami (indigenous people of Norway) tradition style.The drum is a symbol of the circle of life and signifies that we all are connected.The organisation’s vision is “to bind people together across race, religion, borders, cultures, ethnicity, colours or political conviction in a common struggle for humanity and Mother Earth.”Culturefest 2012’s official opening will be at 4pm on Saturday. The opening ceremony will feature special performances, remarks by several dignitaries and the flag procession.There will also be a ‘Worldvibe After Party’ from 9pm to midnight.The after party will feature entertainment from Supatone, Victims of Existence, Working Title, and TJ Gibson — a visiting vocal artist, musician and producer from Los Angeles, California.
