Art show celebrates Academy’s special year

Warwick Academy 350th Anniversary Art ExhibitionWarwick Academy, during this, its 350th anniversary year, has had extensive press coverage and rightly so. Warwick Academy is not only the oldest school in Bermuda, but one of the oldest schools in the new world. Additionally, it is one of our best schools.Warwick Academy is also known for a number of illustrious past students, including Francis Landy Patton, former president of Princeton University, renowned surgeon Sir James Hodsdon and American writer Frederick Buechner. Additionally, the school’s first headmaster was Richard Norwood, a man of numerous and impressive intellectual gifts.Indeed, he has been called Bermuda’s genius of the 17th century. But all this is well documented and widely known.Included in the 350th anniversary celebrations however, is a special art exhibition, which opened on September 28 in the Ace Gallery. All the artists represented in the show, have something to do with Warwick Academy; some as past students and at least one who is currently studying at the school. Some of the artists are parents of either past or present students and one is a grandparent.Several are current teachers, and after having carefully looked the exhibition over, I can report that this is one of the better exhibitions on offer just now. Nevertheless, this exhibition has not had much press coverage, indeed. Although it opened to the public nearly two weeks ago, I only heard about it a couple days ago and the exhibition closes with an auction tonight.Unfortunately, this auction coincides with the opening of the Charman Prize exhibition at the Masterworks Museum, but in talking with one of the Warwick Academy teachers, he said that it is possible to make a pre-auction bid, thus allowing those who wish to participate but not attend.Should you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, call the Warwick Academy office, giving them the name of the work and the artist, plus your bid.In order to help with the bidding there is, with each work, a suggested range of bidding, but should you wish to go higher, of course that is also possible. Some of the artists in the show are: Andrew Dobson, Kathy Harriott, Marion (Armstrong) Thomas, Graham Foster, Neal Towlson, Lynne Mathews, Eileen Thorne, Joy Blackburne, Michelle Smith, Donna Smith, Monica J Jones, Maria Evers Smith, Tim White, David Mitchell and Sharon Wilson.
