Rare books go on sale for charity
If you’ve been looking for a particular out-of-print book to fill a hole in your Bermuda collection, this might be your chance.Local bibliophile Peggy Burns is holding The Heritage Month Bookathon (A Race Towards Knowledge) in hopes of raising money for the Sunshine League, a charity that helps foster children. She will sell out-of-print Bermuda books at the charity’s King Street premises every Saturday next month. Many of the books have been sitting in boxes in the authors’ basements or in storage. On offer will be a range of books including Dale Butler’s ‘It Takes a Smiling Raindrop’, ‘HIM Haile Selassie in Bermuda’ by The Writer’s Machine, ‘Heroines in the Medical Field’ by Ira Phillip and ‘Second Class Citizens, First Class Men’ by Dr Eva Hodgson.Ms Burns also has several copies of the last issue of Bermuda-produced magazine ‘Fame’, edited by June Masters Augustus in the 1970s.“Maybe someone missed purchasing one of these titles when they were first sold,” said Ms Burns. “Or maybe, someone would like to start a collection of Bermuda books. This is the perfect opportunity. They also make great gifts. I know I would have loved receiving a bag full of everyone of these titles. Anyway, if you want them, you better get them now, because when these books are gone, they are gone forever.”The sale will be held on May 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 10am to 5pm at 47 King Street, Hamilton.
