Bryn Thomas, 17, originally from Charlotte, North Carolina has been singing publicly since she was five years old and dancing for the last eight years. When she moved to Bermuda over a year ago she looked around for opportunities to explore her talents further.Bermuda might be a lot smaller than Charlotte but she found her chance in the Bermuda Glee summer programme.“I heard about it from a teacher at the Bermuda High School for Girls, Jane Thorpe, who is involved with it,” she said. “It seemed like the perfect opportunity. I auditioned and now I am really excited to take part.”This week she is one of 70 local students, ages 14 to 18, taking part in the week long Bermuda Glee summer intensive programme, and will be taking part in two Bermuda Glee public shows of ‘Shine’ on Sunday.“These are students from private and public school sectors,” said Troika co-founder Shoa Bean. Bermuda Glee was founded by the Argo Foundation. They are still the title sponsor, but this year they asked Troika to take over the running of the summer programme.“Students all come together for a week,” said Ms Bean. “They work together very intensively throughout the week to put together a show at the end of the week. So it should be very interesting to see what they come up with and how they work together to make the production come together.”The students are broken down into groups. They are given “a stimulus” or an idea to inspire creativity and then told to work together to bring it all into fruition.“It is up to them to choose everything from the songs to the dance to the drummer with the help of the staff,” said Ms Bean. “It builds long lasting relationship. We have seen some kids who were in Glee years before, still going out to lunch or communicating with each other.”Ms Bean and Troika co-founder Sheldon Woolridge are producers of the event, but there are several staff members facilitating the summer intensive including, Steve Huntsman from Las Vegas, Nevada and Eric Bean Jr, a professional dancer.“It is incredible because it will be a huge collaborative effort,” said Ms Bean. “It should be incredible to see what the students are able to come up with. There should be a fabulous outcome.”The show is on Sunday, July 7 with performances at 2pm and 7pm at the Berkeley Institute. Doors open a half-hour before showtime. Tickets are on sale at www.premierticketsglobal.com at $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $40 for patrons. It is general seating so come early to find a good seat.
