Pianist Alex Tuchman is bringing some of the world’s best musicians to the island for the Bermuda Piano Festival.

Mr Tuchman said: “I think this festival is an important addition to the cultural scene on the island.

“We have some of the top pianists in the world and the music that we have selected is diverse and engaging, lively and beautiful. I’m sure even people who don’t regularly attend concerts will find something to enjoy.”

This year’s festival will open this evening with a free concert at the Hamilton Princess, featuring duos by Debussy, Milhaud, Piazzolla and Lutoslawski, followed by a performance by the Giorgi Mikadze Jazz Trio.

The festival continues with a piano recital by Mr Tuchman on Wednesday and a tribute to songwriter Leonard Bernstein on Thursday.

Mr Tuchman said Mr Bernstein, most famous for West Side Story, would have celebrated his 100th birthday in August.

Mr Tuchman said: “The concert is part of a worldwide celebration of his work. It is just one of many concerts being held around the world under the banner of Leonard Bernstein at 100, but I believe it’s the only one of the concerts being held in Bermuda.”

In addition to the concerts, the festival will include two master classes, offering Bermudan musicians the opportunity to work with international performers. Tomorrow, Eteri Andjaparidze will lead a piano masterclass, while the following day Eliza Fath will host a masterclass for cello.

All three concerts begin at 7pm at the Hamilton Princess Trudeau Ballroom. The piano masterclass will be held on Tuesday at 4pm, while the cello masterclass will be held at 4.30pm on Wednesday. Both masterclasses will be held at the Bermuda School of Music.
