Young photographers encouraged to enter Reg Grundy competition
Young photographers are invited to show Bermuda at its best for a competition in memory of an international TV pioneer who lived on the island.
The Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: Your Eyes on Bermuda was launched on Monday by the National Museum of Bermuda with Joy Grundy, Dr Grundy’s widow.
All primary, middle and high school students are eligible to take part.
Dr Grundy, an Australian-Bermudian media mogul who died in 2016, prized wildlife photography, and the competition highlights the island’s natural and cultural environment.
Open to local photographers aged 7 to 18, the competition asks students to shoot in the theme of Bermuda families, Bermuda buildings or Bermuda nature, using a smartphone or digital camera.
Ms Grundy said the competition, now in its fourth year, had gone “from strength to strength”.
“Every year I am pleasantly surprised at the beauty of Bermuda that our children uncover and if you have not yet received a prize, do what Dr. Grundy always said: `If at first you do not succeed, just keep on trying’.”
Entries go by age groups 7 to 10, 11 to 14, and 15 to 18, and can be made using any or all of the themes — but only one picture per theme is accepted.
Students should submit a minimum file size of 1MB with a maximum file size of 50 MB, in jpeg format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dots per inch.
All images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image-editing software or digital enhancements.
Along with Ms Grundy, this year’s judges are photographer Antoine Hunt; Deborah Atwood, the NMB curator; and Chinni Mahadevan, the Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries curator.
Elena Strong, the NMB executive director, said: “Each year, the calibre of student photography submissions gets stronger and stronger, highlighting the creative talent we have on island.”
She thanked Ms Grundy for her support, along with Clarien Bank, AF Smith and Phoenix Stores.
Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the Museum and published in MARITimes, the NMB’s biannual magazine, as well as the on NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites.
Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, gift certificates at Phoenix Stores, and the Best in Show will win a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a carrying case.
The school with the most submissions, based on percentage, will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.
The deadline for submissions for ages 7 to 10 is November 2; 11 to 14, November 3, and for 15 to 18, November 4.
Submissions must be made online only, with an award ceremony to be held on December 8.
