‘It’s going to be a good vibe’
Aidonia is coming for Carnival in Bermuda.
The Jamaican dancehall artist will take the stage early tomorrow morning as one of the signature events of the five-day celebration of Caribbean culture.
It will be his first visit here. On a call from New York, the musician promised the Bermuda audience would have the same epic performance people had come to expect of him since 2005 when his first hit Lolly, scaled the charts.
“It's gonna be my first time there. I'm going to give the same type of show, the same type of vibe,” he said.
“I’m an energy performer; I’m an entertainer. I’m an artist who likes to give people their money's worth – anywhere. My first time, my second time, my third …. I always try to do my best to entertain. So it’s going to be a good vibe.”
Carnival in Bermuda kicked off last night. Events run through Monday. Skinny Fabulous, the soca songwriter, singer and musician from St Vincent, will also perform on Saturday morning.
For Aidonia, it’s one of several shows he is putting on this summer. From Bermuda he travels to French Guiana and then Trinidad & Tobago before heading back to the United States for additional performances in Los Angeles, Washington, Atlanta and other cities.
“This whole summer is booked,” he said.
His show on Saturday will most likely be a little more intimate.
“It doesn't matter. I’ve performed for all different types, all different sizes of audience – from the smallest to the biggest. It just doesn't matter. I just like my work. I like performing. It could be anywhere,” he said.
“Bermuda being a smaller audience, that has nothing to do with the work that I am going to do. I'm going to give the same type of show, the same type of vibe. You know, you have different types of crowds, but artists just have to learn how to adjust to the crowd and just do your best.”
Pretty Please, Yeah Yeah, Ukku and Nuh Boring Gyal are among his many hits from over the years. Even as he travels, Aidonia keeps his focus on “creating new music every day”.
“Just being here is an inspiration; being everywhere is an inspiration. The creative process is easy,” he said.
“You get an idea, you can just put it on your phone, put it in your voice notes and have it as a reminder at any time you can get back to that song. And then I travel with my studio so if I want to record right now, I can go to my hotel room and record. It's like that.”
Aidonia was born in Kingston in 1981. Although music “has been part of [his] whole life, from school days” he only became a professional entertainer about 15 years ago.
“It was a dream, but you never think it could happen because in Jamaica, the music space … it’s so competitive. And at the time when I got my break, it was way more competitive at that time.
“We didn't have social media and phones and stuff that made it easier. It was more industrious work; you had to go out there and go for it. It was different back then.
“So as a child growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, you could only dream of making it work. You didn't know it could happen until it happened.”
The artist is a fan of the reggae and soca typically heard at carnivals around the world and has “been on soca beats before”, but his preference in his downtime isn’t as lively.
“I actually don't listen to my stuff because my stuff is my stuff and that's what I create,” he said. “I mostly like rap music. I listen to old time dancehall – Bounty Killer, Beanie Man, Shabba Ranks, Ninja Man, Supa Cat, Baby Cham …. I listen to that and mostly rap music. Even older rap music like Biggie and DMX, music from those times.”
Fans can expect a lot from the artist in the coming months.
“I'm doing a lot musically,” Aidonia said. “I have a lot of new songs, a lot of new releases, a lot of new music videos coming up in the next coming weeks. And then I have an EP that will be released in September.”
