Bermuda Art Centre marks 40th anniversary

Anniversary exhibition: Otto Trott’s depiction of Tobacco Bay, showing at the Bermuda Art Centre in Dockyard (Image courtesy of Bermuda Art Centre)

Forty years ago, on October 14, 1984, The Bermuda Art Centre at Dockyard was officially opened by Princess Margaret, and the venue is celebrating this event by hosting an art exhibition of those involved in its establishment.

I was there the day of the opening, along with others who were involved the centre’s establishment. I think of Emma Ingham, who was the primary force behind getting it going. I think of J.C. “Kit” Astwood, who, as chairman of the West End Development Corporation, was not only huge in his encouragement, he was an active participant in getting the centre established.

I think of others who were exhibiting on opening day, such as Desmond Fountain, Eldon Trimingham and Sharon Muhammad. I think of Ian Gordon, the architect who designed the refurbished building.

From the get-go the centre was known for quality and even unusual exhibition. That being the case, the public came in droves to see and support. It was like they were hungry for creative and beautiful art. Each exhibition was either juried or curated. By this means, the centre held to a high standard.

There are nine artists exhibiting in the current exhibition, The Originals 2024. Notable are the technical variety and styles on show. Included is the art of Christopher Marson, who is showing his landscapes in watercolour and gouache.

Desmond Fountain is exhibiting a number of etchings, while Emma Ingham is showing sketches in ink and wash.

Lynn Morrell has contributed quilted wall hangings, while Otto Trott is showing oil landscapes. His depiction of Tobacco Bay is especially appealing.

Sharon Muhammad has created several encaustics. For those not in the know, encaustic is pigment in hot wax. It is an ancient technique that is currently undergoing a modern renaissance.

Sheilagh Head has on show a number oil landscapes in oil, plus a couple of abstracts, while Vaughn Evans has contributed his amazing woodcuts.

This is an exhibition worth the drive to Dockyard and support for the Bermuda Art Centre.

The Bermuda Art Centre 40th anniversary exhibition continues through November 10, 2024
