A partnership between Mastercard and Butterfield Bank during the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship helped to boost charitable donations by $150,000, according to the global payment firm.

During last year’s tournament, Mastercard matched the amount of each purchase made by Butterfield Mastercard debit and credit card-holders at the championship’s merchandise tent, dollar for dollar, as a donation to Birdies for Charity, a Butterfield programme that helps local charities.

Additionally, attendees could donate $10 or more to access a new Butterfield Mastercard rest area, with an incentive to donate $35, or more, by receiving a free tile tracker device and entry into a gift certificate draw. Mastercard made an additional contribution to reach the total amount as part of their wider commitment to “doing well by doing good”.

“At Mastercard, we understand the importance of thriving communities and are thrilled that our ongoing partnership with Butterfield has enabled us to enrich the charitable impact of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and have a positive impact on Bermuda’s community,” Jimena Elia, country manager for Mastercard’s west and Dutch Caribbean markets, said.

“The Butterfield Bermuda Championship continues to provide an excellent opportunity for us to combine the passion for golf with our commitment to providing cardholders with unique experiences while also supporting the wider community.”

Peter Fawn, Butterfield’s group head of card services, thanked Mastercard for their support.

“We also extend our thanks to the thousands of attendees, in addition to our valued Butterfield Mastercard clients, who generously donated and purchased official merchandise during the tournament,” Mr Fawn said. “Together we have been able to contribute to the wellbeing of our community and look forward to doing the same this year.”

The 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship, an official PGA Tour event, took place last November at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.
