Juniors looking for first victory
Steven Simons and his national junior select team are still looking for their first win at the Las Vegas Championships.Bermuda’s team were –defeated 73-42 to Legacy High on Monday, before –losing 78-36 against Western High 78-36 and 54-46 to Spring Creek Las Vegas on Tuesday. All matches have been played at Las Vegas High School. It is the third time a Bermuda team have made the trip to Vegas for the Championships. Previous visits were led by former coach Chris Crumpler who stepped down from his position recently.Simons, whose under-19 team have been practicing every day since the Thanksgiving Classic held on local shores, believes gaining experience is more important than picking up wins in Vegas.“The boys are still going through that phase where they are nervous and in awe of the competition and this was evident in our first game,” said Simons.“Once they settled into the game and realised that they can play at this level we competed well.“Obviously we suffer from a lack of size which affects our play but I expect us to improve as the tournament goes on.“The difference was athleticism and size and the fact that these kids out here play at this level on a consistent basis.“This is another learning experience for our guys and hopefully they will learn what it takes to play at this level.”The tournament runs from December 26 to the 31.Bermuda team: Kevin Minors (captain), Anthony Furbert (captain), Khaivon Castro, Juron Tucker, Lucas Barbey, Mickai McGowan, Joshua Reid, Chris Corday.n Youngsters can improve their basketball skills at two Bermuda Youth Sports Programme (BYSP) camps next month at BHS gym.Camp one is for children aged from 7 to 9-years-old and will run from January 6-8, while camp two is for 10 to 13-year-olds from January 7-8.The camps, which are sponsored by Nephila Capital, are free to attend although donations made to the BYSP will be appreciated.Due to space and equipment each camp is limited to 50 children.
