Women included in All-Star weekend

The Bermuda Gas SKY Basketball All-Star weekend will add a little spice to the programme this year in the shape of a women’s game that will see two players fulfill a dream of a lifetime.Adding to the event, which takes place on May 6 and 7, organisers arranged for two WNBA players to fly to the Island to look at local players, resulting with two of them heading to Chicago to play with the Chicago Sky of the WNBA.Lee Greene of SKY Basketball, Cynthia Wright of Bermuda Gas, and Dale Jackson and Greg Todd of the Bermuda Basketball Association (BBA), made the announcement this week.Greene also confirmed there would be a celebrity game that will see the likes of David Bascome and John Barry Nusum trade in their cleats for a basketball.“Thanks to Bermuda Gas and Cynthia Wright for extending the invitation to us, as well as president of the BBA Dale Jackson and vice president Greg Todd,” said Greene.“The event is a platform for the local guys to showcase their talent and hopefully get looked at overseas.“It will be a fun time, a chance to come out and see the best that Bermuda have to offer.“Friday afternoon is an open scrimmage for women that will also feature two WNBA players.“After the scrimmage we will select two players to go and train with the WNBA side Chicago Sky. This will give the players a chance to play at a higher level, and also see how they train and meet people in the front office and so forth.”Saturday morning will see a free skills clinic for all women before the celebrity game at 7 pm. The main event starts at 8 pm with the SKY All-Stars taking on the best of Bermuda’s talent.John Lee, Steven Simons, Dean Jones are just a few that will suit up for Bermuda in the event.All the games are free to the community, with proceeds going to the Sunshine LeagueWright added: “This is a great opportunity to showcase the youth and give back to the community on our part.“Last year we were fortunate enough to help a young man get scouted, Terrence Dill, as small as our contribution was to get a scholarship.“We are delighted to help promote this event.”
