Thanksgiving Classic returns for second year

In its second year of existence, event organiser Crumpler is looking to continue where the Classic left off last year.“We are excited about having the second annual Thanksgiving Classic at the Berkeley Institute next month,” said the national team player. “We are excited, we like the fact that the local boys will be playing every night on the big stage, so the whole point is to give our children a chance to shine and do well.“Last year was a great event in the first year, so we felt to do it again and they are making the trip in a time of economic hardships so it is great for them to be coming down here.”Teams in this year’s Classic include Northwood High School from Shreveport, Louisiana, Boca Raton High, Florida and Georgetown District High from Ontario, with the trio set to lock horns with a Bermuda select team in a round robin format, opposed to last year’s group format.Wins and losses will determine who plays in the championship game, while points scored and conceded will be the tiebreakers if teams are tied in the wins and loss columns.Another night was added to the schedule this year, with last year’s being held over two days, while local youth groups will spice up the half time entertainment of each game.On the back of their impressive performances at the inaugural Classic, a few local players were invited to move abroad to continue their education.“We had a few players from last year’s team that were scouted and are now playing abroad, so this is a good chance for the boys to get looked at by some scouts,” said Crumpler.“It is really a great chance for the local guys to go out and show what they have and maybe get looked at and invited to played abroad, but in the end it is all about the friendly competitive atmosphere of the tournament.“The emphasis is really on showcasing the talent in Bermuda and to have it all in a friendly, family environment where people feel safe and can enjoy themselves.”
