Northwood High and Georgetown District High got off to winning starts last night at the second annual Thanksgiving Classic at the Berkeley Institute Gym.Georgetown kept their composure late in their opening fixture against the Bermuda Select side, eventually prevailing 51-38, thanks to centre Sebastian Beckett who dominated the paint from the outset to lead all scorers.Bermuda were down 20-19 at the half, and were never allowed to get the lead back in the second half as they would start the Classic on the losing end.Anthony Furbert was critical of his side’s play, particularly in the third and fourth quarters in which they seemed to have no answer for Beckett and company.“We started off strong but as we had the lead we became complacent, made some dumb mistakes and in the end we only have ourselves to blame,” said Furbert. “We weren’t facing him up and our coach told us to box out and get in his face but that didn’t really work after he was piling on the points, but we will learn from this and be ready for tomorrow.”Northwood also won comfortably, beating Boca Raton 75-41in the night’s opening game, with the match never really having any question marks on who the winner would be with the eventual winners holding a 56-36 halftime lead.Broderick Richardson led the team from Louisiana with 21 points.Event organiser Chris Crumpler was pleased with the first of three nights, although admitting that it was disappointing to see the home side not get the win to open their campaign.“The first night was great in terms of action and the fans, the teams are loving the hospitality so it’s going good thus far,” said Crumpler. “Obviously we wanted our home team to win but they seemed to lose the energy in the second half and lost, but it was a good effort put forth by them.“We built this team knowing that we could come up against quality opposition and we fell just short tonight, but we can come back tomorrow and get a win and that’s what is great about this, you don’t have to wait a week or so to play.“We are more adapt to playing the likes of the other two teams that run up and down and we play a half court game so it should be interesting as the games go on.Crumpler was also impressed by the first match of the night.“Northwood played a good game, they came out a bit slow but picked it up as the game went on, but it’s unfortunate for Boca Raton because their stay player suffered a third degree sprain just last week and couldn’t play.“Overall, it has been a good night.”Action continues today with a quadruple header. Bermuda will play Northwood at 12.30pm, while Georgetown face Boca Raton at 2pm.The evening will also see Boca Raton take on the local side at 7pm, with Northwood playing Georgetown at 8.30pm.
