Bermuda seal first win in OT thriller
Bermuda won their first ever Thanksgiving Classic game last night after seeing off a spirited Boca Raton side 61-59 in overtime at the Berkeley Institute.Up by 18 at the half, and with the score at 35-14 early in the third quarter, the team from Florida clawed their way back to within one with 36 seconds left and levelled matters at 54 at the end of the fourth quarter. The hosts, however, held their nerve to grab their first ever win at the Classic.“It was a great game, an exciting overtime thriller that saw Bermuda win their first ever game in the tournament so it was great to see the excitement in both sets of fans as they rooted on their teams,” said organiser Chris Crumpler.“We showed tonight that we can compete with the overseas teams and give them a go and I’m proud of the guys.“Although it could have been more comfortable with the big lead, the victory is what matters and I am waiting to see what goes on tomorrow.“They made some turnovers that they shouldn’t have in this game but that is part of the growing process.“To go throughout the adversity of this game speaks about growth and for them it bodes well in the long run to com through something like this.“I’m happy that they won, last night they were winning and didn’t get the win but it was pleasing to see the boys grab the win.“For the team to go from not winning a game last year to playing for third place this time around speaks volumes about their dedication and work ethic.”Both sides were winless heading into the contest after the home side lost 72-47 to Norwood High, while Raton lost to previously unbeaten Georgetown District High 68-41 in the opening two matches of the day.And while the tournament final and third place showdowns were already settled heading into the final fixtures of the night, it was all to play for in terms of psychological advantage for all four teams. For Norwood High, the lone unbeaten side in the competition after their convincing win over Georgetown in the nightcap, a 56-34 result, it will be more about finishing off a job that they set out to do.“Over the two games yesterday Bermuda did well, when you try and get over a hump and you can’t it lends you to believe that you can’t do it but in the end they came through, and that bodes well for tonight’s rematch.“The games today will see a rematch of the games that were on tap tonight and it will be interesting to see all the teams regroup, this is for the youth and for everyone to come out and enjoy themselves and see some good basketball.“I know the boys from Norwood won’t like to have come this far to lost in the championship game and Georgetown will be looking to give them their first loss, so it is all to play for and I hope everyone comes out to support these guys because they are doing a great job.”The third place game between Bermuda and Boca Raton kicks off at 7pm, while Georgetown will look to end Norwood’s unbeaten run at 8.30pm, with both games to be played the Berkeley Institute.
