Under-12 team compete in Disney tournament

Charles Peters will lead the Under-12 Bermuda Select basketball team to the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida this week to compete in the Global Cup as they look to gain experience at the international level. The select side, who left local shores Sunday, will come up against teams from the Philippines and Florida, while also participating in a two-day camp to hone their skills ahead of their first game tomorrow.“A friend of the BBA came to us about a tournament he was an administrator for and wanted to help us in getting the younger players in the arena in order for them to learn at an early age,” said Bermuda Basketball Association (BBA) youth coordinator Chris Crumpler.“What we were finding is that the teenagers were already behind their counterparts worldwide and we needed to get on board and help them at an early age with the basics so that they can be competitive.“It has been a learning experience for everyone and we have been preparing the children for this level of competition.“We have sent a team to go and play, and although we had a team that took a heavy loss to a touring team a few weeks ago, it is good for them to get the experience and to know that they can only get better by playing against better teams.”Coach Peters began coaching in Bermuda in 2001 when he started the Wolf Pack Basketball Programme for high school and Bermuda College players seeking to play overseas.Since then, two players from the Wolf Pack programme have gone on to play in the United States, one in college and the other in high school.Peters is no stranger to international competition, having been the starting shooting guard for the Bermuda national team in 2005, helping the country to gold and bronze medals at the Island Games. He still holds the record for the most three-point baskets scored in a game (eight) in a match against the Cayman Islands. He also played collegiate basketball for the NCAA Division I team Drexel University Dragons who won the North Atlantic Conference Championship (NAC) in 1995, earning a sport in the NCAA Tournament. The two-day Florida camp ends today with competition play kicking off tomorrow when the side face the Philippines.Team: Colby Antonio Luke Mapp, Kumari Masai Patrick Tannock, Derek Cabral Tucker-Peters, Rye Jensen Ahronson, Caelin Alexander Peters, Zane Curtis-Thomas, Miguel Luciano Bento Perry, Mical Josiah Dominic Hardtman, Kobie Anaiah Kwame Reid, Jacy Tariq Lowery, Kenai Anthony Stowe, Tyler Jackson HurdleCoaches: Charles Peters, Charles Lowery, Derek Hurdle; Managers: Jeannaire Christopher-Peters, Craig Perry
