Raushon Tankard enjoyed a memorable first season at Stanstead College in Montreal after helping the school win the Provincial title.

The 16-year-old caught the eye of the school’s coaching staff while playing for the Bermuda Under-19 side at last year’s Thanksgiving Classic on the Island.

Tankard was subsequently invited to enrol at the school to play basketball.

Already a member of the Hurricanes’ basketball programme that helps to produce the under-19 team, the point guard said he enjoyed his first season representing Stanstead.

“The year was very good as I learned a lot, which helped to improve my game,” Tankard said. “The experience had its ups and downs, but as expected, I was super busy with basketball and school work. I didn’t, however, expect to meet as many cool people as I did, which was fantastic.

“Everyone was very helpful in getting me settled in and things like that.”

Tankard helped Stanstead to six titles out of a possible seven.

They won the Visser Provinicial tournament, beating Howard S Billing 57-52, the ETIAC championship, defeating Massey-Vannier 82-50, and a 56-52 win over Westwood in the BCS Invitational.

They also won the HSB tournament, Anderson tournament, Stanstead Invitational and their regular season title with a perfect 9-0 record.

The only blemish during their season came in the CAIS tournament, winning two games and losing three.

“It was a great way to end the season. Going forward, I’m just going to keep on trying to improve my game,” Tankard added.

“Basketball never stops, so I can’t either.”

Stanstead competed in the Thanksgiving Classic in Bermuda last November.

The Bermuda Under-14 girls’ side lost their opening tour match in Montreal on Wednesday.

They put up a good fight but ultimately came up short in a 54-45 defeat by Dorvall-Jean XXIII Falcons in an exhibition match.

Inshan-nae Smith and Zariah Amory scored nine points each while Demiqua Daniels chipped in with eight.

“A tough loss, but a valuable experience,” Tim Trott, the Bermuda coach, said.

Bermuda were due to face Villa Maria Academy yesterday before taking on Lakeside Academy today.

Tomorrow will see the Islanders participate in a round robin tournament against four club teams.
