Promising players to develop skills at Syracuse camp

Making most of opportunities: Tankard, from the Hurricanes programme, attend Stanstead College in Montreal

Five talented basketball players have been invited to the weeklong Jim Boeheim basketball camp at Syracuse University in New York.

Kumari Tannock, Jorel Smith, Mykal Glasgow, Zachary Johnson and Jacy Lowery, who represent the Hurricanes programme on the Island, will attend the camp at Syracuse, one of the top university’s from June 28 to July 2.

Hurricane’s coach is Douglas Reed, an alumni of Syracuse.

“This opportunity came about because we are aware that many universities and colleges hold basketball camps on their campuses during the summer,” Reed said.

“[They want] to get prospective students and potential basketball recruits on their campus and thereby drawing that student-athlete’s interest in the school.

“The Team Hurricane players will get a small taste of college life and get a chance to stay in the dormatoies and walk around the campus.

“More importantly, they will get a chance to play competitive basketball in one of college basketball’s top venues, the Carrier Dome, although not in front of 30,000 fans.”

Hurricane’s Raushon Tankard enrolled at Stanstead College, in Montreal, in January to further both his academic and sporting development. Tankard won several titles in his first year at the school.

The Syracuse camp will be led by legendary National Collegiate Athletic Association coach Jim Boeheim, who is second on the all-time wins list behind Duke University’s Mike Krzyzewski.

Reed believes that an early insight on how the game is played and how to execute while on the court will go a long way in each players’ development.

Tannock, Smith and Lowery all play the point guard position, while Glasgow is a shooting guard and Johnson is a shooting guard/small forward.

“These five are reflective of all the young men involved in the Team Hurricane Basketball programme,” Reed added. “They are talented, hardworking and committed to the game.

“Team Hurricane Basketball programme is loaded at the guard position, in particular the point guard position. We have high expectations for those playing the point, we demand a lot of them, even in the early stages of their development.

“The camp will be great for Kumari, Jorel and Jacy who are only in middle school and have already shown the toughness and great leadership skills needed to play the point guard position.

“Mykal is developing into one the best shooting guards on the Island.

“He has a smooth, consistent jump shot and is an instinctive passer.

“Zachary is developing into a premier front court player, a rugged, interior player who has the ability to step out the perimeter and knock down the open jump shot.”
