Island’s best head to BVI for elite camp
Six young Bermudian basketballers have headed to the British Virgin Islands to take part in the three-day Digicel NBA Jumpstart Elite Camp.
The players were selected at the end of the three-day Jumpstart Clinic, which took place at the Berkeley Institute in August.
The three days of intense coaching consisted of individual drills, shooting competitions, games and skills development.
Seven players were originally selected to take part in the elite camp, however Jalen Currin was unable to travel.
The six who have gone will be joined by 57 players selected from Digicel NBA Jumpstart Clinics held in eight Caribbean countries.
The players representing Bermuda are Caelin Peters, Jorel Smith, Rye Ahronson, Kobie Reid, Siyaunne Hall and Ishan-Nae Smith.
At the end of the camp, the NBA and Digicel will choose the top 13 players — eight boys and five girls — who will have an opportunity to take part in the Digicel Jumpstart Experience in the United States before Christmas.
“These boys and girls who have made it to the Elite Camp are not only the best in their countries, they are also the embodiment of hard work, dedication and a good attitude. Congratulations to all them,” said Robin Searle, the Digicel Bermuda chief executive.
“The players, along with their family and friends, will also be able to relive the memorable moments from the camp, which will be shared on all of our social media platforms and on SportsMax.”
The players will be coached by Robert Horry, a seven-times NBA champion, Lionel Hollins, an 1977 NBA champion and former NBA head coach, and two-times WNBA All-Star, Skylar Diggins. The camp runs from October 7 to 9.
Last year Berkeley student Yontz Sutton made it through to elite camp and into a group of the region’s best for a trip of a lifetime to New York.
The trip included training at NBA facilities, games against local teams in the tri-state area, and the chance to watch a game between the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors.
“We are delighted that the Jumpstart programme has given these boys such an amazing opportunity to get first-hand training from highly qualified coaches,” Phillipe Moggio, the NBA senior vice-president for Latin America, said.
