Youngsters put through paces at skills camp
The Team Hurricane Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp has been hailed as a “huge success” and served to confirm that Bermuda hoop talent is on the rise.
Held last week over three days, the third annual camp at Warwick Academy saw Doug Reed, the Hurricanes’ founder and president, hand the reins to overseas coaches John Alexander, Kevin Quinlan and Ryan Borzager.
All three coaches are from John Alexander’s Alexander Basketball Academy in Pennsylvania. The players learnt fundamental training techniques including footwork, speed, agility, ball-handling, and shooting.
Quinlan reflected upon the talent and heart of Bermuda’s young players.
“Our primary objective for the event was to put the Bermudian ballers through US-style high-intensity skills and strength training,” he said.
“We led the boys and girls through an array of drills designed to sharpen their ball-handling, shooting, and passing, as well as improve their grasp of team concepts such as cutting to score and developing power and agility.”
Reed was thrilled with the continued success of the camp.
“Working with the Alexander Basketball Academy has been such an awesome experience because it enables our programme to provide an intense training environment for young student-athletes here in Bermuda,” he said. “Furthermore, it has provided opportunities for Team Hurricane players to participate in their summer intensive programme in July, and gain experience playing in front of college coaches.
“We look forward to them visiting Bermuda for the Team Hurricane Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp again next April.”
Team Hurricane Basketball Academy is a free youth basketball programme for players aged five to 21. For more details call Reed on 504-1962.
