Hornets improved their record to 4-3 in the Atlantic Vision Care Elite City League after thrashing the winless Marksmen 73-28 at Somersfield Academy on Wednesday night.

Omar Wolfe and Darae Smith each scored 17 points for the expansion Hornets, while Alex Butterfield added 14.

“We try to go inside and get a couple of easy layups and get our big men the ball and if our shooters are open, get it to them so they can knock it down,” said point guard Jorel Smith, who added seven points to the Hornets’ cause.

Smith was full of praise for team-mates Wolfe and Butterfield.

“Omar’s a great all-round player. He’s one of our shooters,” Smith said.

“Alex is our only real big man, so if we need a layup he’s the strongest person on the court for that.”

Smith went to the Global Squad Basketball Academy in August to hone his skills, and the high-school senior, who attends CedarBridge Academy, hopes the experience will lead to a college scholarship in the United States.

“I was in camp in Pennsylvania for a month,” Smith said. “Basically, it’s about the level of American competition. There is no American competition here, so when I go out there it’s against people who I hope to be going against in college.”

“It’s my last year in high school, so hopefully I’ll be playing in Division I.”

The ECL continues at Somersfield today, when Smith’s Hornets face the Panthers at 7pm and the Marksmen play the Falcons at 8.10pm. On Wednesday, the Hornets take on the Renegades at 7pm, followed by Warriors v Falcons at 8.10pm.
