The Answer on cloud nine after winning basketball playoffs
The Answer are celebrating after winning their first Bermuda Basketball Association Play-off final.
A 55-45 triumph over The Kings was enough to hand coach Troy Pitcher’s side their maiden title in their second season of the draft league.
“It really feels good to win the league,’’ Pitcher said. “It was a good team effort and it wasn't the greatest offensive game in the world, but we played good defence and we won.
“We were down in the first half and guys actually just started to play better defence and made shots more difficult for the other team.
“The Kings had a hard time scoring in the second half and we scored. We managed to close out the distance and tied the game up going into fourth quarter. We kept up the defensive pressure and managed to win it in the end.
“Everybody played well in the second half and kept it together. Kevin Stevens won MVP, Eric Lambert and our captain Darae Smith had major contributions in the second half.
“It was very impressive as we weren't expected to win. Some people actually thought our team was young enough to be competitive, but to go out there and win it was our goal.”
While he had won titles as a player before, it was Pitcher’s first play-off success as a coach.
“This is my first championship as a coach,’’ he said. “As a player I've actually won a couple of times back in the day when I was young, but with the draft league we've been having, I've been to the final a couple of times but never won it.
“Every year we actually have a pool of players and we get to pick from the pool of players to put the teams together.
“Sometimes we change the names of the teams but we've stuck with The Answer for two seasons.”
In a league without a sponsor, The Answer are pleased to enjoy support from a local pharmaceutical company.
“I'm extremely grateful to Caesars who have been our sponsors for four years and they've been excellent,’’ Pitcher said.
