Basketball association seeks solutions amid league suspension

An annual meeting scheduled for January 24 is expected to come up with solutions to difficulties faced by the Bermuda Basketball Association.

The gathering, to be held at a yet-to-be-decided venue, comes at a time when the senior men’s league has been suspended for undisclosed reasons. A notice posted on the league’s social-media platforms on December 4 announced that all games had been postponed until further notice.

Rickey Watts, the BBA president, and his committee are expected to hear from members on how best to take the sport forward. Concerns are said to have been raised by the membership about coaching and officiating development, as well as the structure of youth basketball on the island.

BBA vice-president Joshua Nesbitt, the executive committee member in charge of the league, would not be drawn on what caused the league to be halted but is hopeful that it should resume after the AGM.

“We are having our annual general meeting on January 24,” Nesbitt said. “At the present moment, there’s nothing going on with the league and it won’t start up again until after the meeting.

“Something came up that I cannot discuss and it forced us to postpone the league. We’re hoping that everything gets solved or should be solved by January 24.”

The six-team league started in November before it was suspended the same month with only two rounds of matches played. If it does resume at the end of January, it will conclude in April.

“The games that have been missed will be scheduled at the end of the month,” the BBA vice-president said. “It means the season will be four weeks longer than what was originally planned.”

Meanwhile, the Bermuda Youth Basketball All-Star Division resumes on Saturday at Mount Saint Agnes Academy gymnasium.

The first match starts at 5.45pm when Raptors take on Cobras. Piranhas and Mambas, who top the table, take to the court at 6.45pm, before Tigers square off with Bulldogs an hour later to bring the triple-header to an end.

In matches played on December 21, just before the league went on a festive season break, Bulldogs defeated Cobras 61-33. Mambas, who have not lost a match since they went down to Tigers on October 19, were 47-31 victorious over Raptors, with Piranhas 63-35 triumphant against Tigers.
