When law firm Carey Olsen set up six years ago, the goal was to one day become a listing sponsor at the Bermuda Stock Exchange.

This week, firm partners Steven Rees Davies and Matthew Grigg rang the bell at the BSX’s Pitts Bay Road headquarters, a ritual for new listing sponsors.

Greg Wojciechowski, the chief executive of the BSX, said: “This is a welcome party to the BSX listing community. We worked together a lot over the past year. We got this over the line and now it is a matter of really putting the tyres to the pavement and seeing how we can help drive business to Carey Olsen and they can work with us to drive business to the BSX.”

“Being a listing sponsor on the Bermuda Stock Exchange is a great evolutionary step for Carey Olsen,” partner Matthew Grigg said.

Mr Rees Davies said by joining the BSX, the firm was responding to client requests.

“Many of our clients have been asking for this,” he said. “We are proud to continue delivering world-class corporate services to our clients in Bermuda and as a BSX listing sponsor we can now expand our role as trusted advisers to clients seeking both legal listing advice and listing services.”

He said its team had many years of experience acting as legal counsel for companies seeking a BSX listing.

“This includes some of the most innovative and complex listings,” he said. “We are delighted to have taken this step to enhance our service offering.”

He said market conditions were very positive for them.

“We have already had numerous instructions from people waiting for us to provide this service,” he said.

The firm has always been supportive of the BSX.

“They attract more business to the island and encourage an increase in commercial activity on the island,” he said.

Mr Rees Davies said the BSX had a fabulous product offering that you could not find offshore.

The BSX was established in 1971 and now has more than 1,300 listings, including insurance-related securities, debt and investment funds, as well as those of small to medium enterprise companies. It is a full member of the World Federation of Exchanges and an affiliate member of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions.
