Country must pull together - employment expert

Employers, employees and Government should work together to revive Bermuda’s growth both economically and socially, according to a top employment specialist.Doug Soares, partner at Expertise Ltd., said that while instant relief was often derived from denial, delusion and blame during these tough economic times, that relief was always short-lived.“So my hope for 2011 is that employers, employees and the government work together to deepen their understanding and appreciation for one another such that, together, we can take the extraordinarily difficult steps to get Bermuda growing again, not just economically but as hospitable people,” he said.“Indeed it is my hope for 2011 is that each of us will do more to tap the transformative power of each role we play in life - as parents and children, as husbands and wives, as teachers and students, as friends and neighbours, as volunteers and philanthropists, as employers and employees, as public servants and members of the public, and as Bermudians and valued guests.”Martin Law, executive diMartin Law, executive director of the Bermuda Employers’ Council, said he would like to see Bermuda coming out of the current economic downturn and for employment levels to pick up again to replace the significant number of jobs that had been lost over the past few years, as well as some stability being brought to the economy.“I think 2011 is going to be another difficult year for us,” he said. I think if there is light at the end of the tunnel it is beyond 2011.”Kelly Francis, president and senior consultant at Performance Solutions, said that her hope was that employers were in a position to weather the difficult times ahead and if they were faced with the need to make hard decisions that they take the time to explore all the available options and get the right advice before taking action. For employees, she said that they should recognise that employers’ number one goal is to remain viable and retain as many jobs as possible, so performance expectations will be high, and rather than bonuses, promotions or raises the only reward for a job well done may be job security.
