The Job with Andre Cannonier

Andre Cannonier

THE JOB with Andre CannonierAge: 38Role: Assistant superintendent, Tucker’s Point Golf CourseWhat is your job? As the Assistant Superintendant my duties are to help the superintendant in the every day running of the golf course, whether it be assigning duties to staff in his absence or supervising capital projects. One of my major responsibilities is supervising the spray technicians with application rates and timing of fertilisers, fungicides or herbicides for the golf course in general. What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job would have to be manipulating the grass to grow. Its not just as easy as water and fertiliser. A lot of the grass we have to grow is high maintenance and there is an acute science to keeping it healthy, making it the best playing surface possible. I am constantly learning at my task and hope to be a superintendant someday, that is my ultimate goal. Other than that it would be working with my crew. Most of us have been working together for more than 10 years. So were like family. What is your least favourite part of the job? The least favourite part of the job for me would have to be making early time in the morning. I have to get up at 7am (not a good time for me) and sometimes 6.30am. I’m not really a morning person and that doesn’t help. What is your most interesting experience at work? My most interesting experience would have to be working at the US Open in 2008. The week was hard work because of all the rain, but the experience I gained and the contacts I made were priceless. Making 3.30am to work, having to solve problems on the fly, watching how the US Golf Association made it all come together and was special. Also meeting people from all walks of the globe working hand in hand with them was something I will always remember and cherish. What would you be doing otherwise? Well I would still be in the golf industry. One of my other passions is playing golf itself and I love teaching the game and watching people improve. So much so that the friends that I have helped can now beat me. If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now I would definitely be a teaching pro.
