The Job with Orrin Caines
Age: 35 (The truth is, I have been in denial for so long, I have forgotten which year I arrived on planet earth. In the interest of this interview, I think I might be in my mid-30s)Role: Logistics co-ordinator, BelcoWhat is your job? Logistics - support, plan, implement, process and control the flow of all Belco's consignments. What is your favourite part of the job? Co-ordinating oversized consignments from various regions around the world. It could be a 20 ton turbine engine from Germany, North America, or Canada. One of the exciting roles within my remit is to seek and recommend the most logistical and practical way of expediting such consignments. Bermuda, being small, yet densely populated is challenging when it comes to moving huge items, particularly while also complying with Government protocols. When moving large equipment, success depends on setting up meetings and collaborating with the various stakeholders, including the cargo carriers, HM Customs, The Corporation of Hamilton, Stevedoring Services, Freight Forwarders and Police escorts. This is the only way a consignment as such can arrive in Bermuda safely. What is your least favourite part of the job? Having spent a great deal of time, energy and resources for such arrangements only to learn that the script must be changed or modified in the middle of production. What is your most interesting experience at work? Providing support to our team of buyers, as well as engineers, our warehouse staff and accounts. There is never a dull moment within these respective areas. One has to nurture, massage and sometimes compromise each situation as it relates to the requisition and purchase order. What would you be doing otherwise? I would love to be sitting in the garden eating watermelon with my grandmother, the late Muriel Olivia Louise Harvey and mother, the late Inez Maureen Caines. Those two ladies played a significant role in my overall development. They continue to do so, even now as angels perpetually looking over me.
